apibrėžtis Dirbtinis labai smulkių ore tvyrančių kietųjų arba skystųjų medžiagų dalelių aerozolis. Dūmų naudojimo tikslas: maskuoti nuo priešo savo kariuomenės išdėstymą ir veiksmus; sunkinti priešo stebėjimą ir mažinti jo ugnies veiksmingumą; trukdyti priešo optinei elektroninei aparatūrai, stebėjimo ir ginklų taikymo priemonėms (lazerinėms, televizinėms ir kt.). Spalvotieji dūmai naudojami signalinėse priemonėse. Nuodingieji dūmai gali būti naudojami kaip cheminis ginklas ar masinių neramumų malšinimo cheminė medžiaga.
